Description
The sun rises over the beautiful landscape of Utah's Bryce Canyon.
This image was taken with a Canham 4x5 Large Format camera on 4"x5" slide film.
Large format cameras take time -- up to thirty minutes -- to set up for one photograph. So waking up ultra-early driving hours to get there, choosing the best location for this lens and focal length, and allowing time to set up the rest of the necessary gear while anticipating the exact time of day for this moment was critical.
For Large Format photography, once the ultra-heavy tripod, along with the camera body and lens are in place, the photographer must cover their head under a dark cloth and look through a loop pressed against the ground glass plate to focus the camera. Beyond that, the image on the back of the camera (on the ground glass) is both upside-down and backward. Seeing the world this way forces the brain to process it differently -- slowly and often meticulously.
There's no auto-anything, no auto-focus, and no light meter, so a hand-held light meter is used, and every camera setting is a physical gear that must be rotated into a precise position for each image.
All these components force the photographer to slow down, breathe deeply, and weigh the cost and time of each image before proceeding. More time means more contemplation about the scene -- spending time in that space, with that emotion -- and it increases the deliberate thought about how to photograph the subject with profound intention.
All these road bumps in time that slow down the process become blessings to the work. They encourage discipline and require the photographer to be fully present to capture a single image.
